Why Do Families Rely on Westhaven Elmhurst Community Recreation Association?

For more than four decades, Westhaven Elmhurst Community Recreation Association has been a trusted resource for families seeking safe, supportive programs and after-school activities for their children. Initially created by local parents who wanted a secure place for kids to grow, we’ve carried that mission forward with licensed staff, age-appropriate activities, and strong community partnerships.

Our facility has evolved to meet growing needs, but our focus remains the same: creating a welcoming environment where kids are supervised, engaged, and empowered every day. With deep roots in the N.D.G./C.D.N. community and ongoing support from the City of Montreal, we’re proud to be a place families can rely on.

How After-School Programs Help Students

After-school programs are more than just a way to fill the hours between school and dinnertime. They offer children the chance to build life skills, grow emotionally, and develop stronger social awareness. At Westhaven Elmhurst Community Recreation Association, we design every activity with intentionality, combining structure and creativity to support whole-child development.

Through hands-on projects, team-building games, and guided learning, kids gain confidence, empathy, and independence while forming meaningful relationships with their peers and mentors. These experiences help them navigate social situations, solve problems more effectively, and approach new challenges with resilience.

Why Is Creativity Important in After-School Programs?

The creative activities in our program help children build skills in a supportive and engaging environment. When they participate in arts, crafts, cooking, and group games, they develop emotional awareness, coordination, and practical problem-solving abilities. Activities such as sculpting, painting, and following a recipe encourage self-expression, focus, and collaboration. These hands-on experiences reinforce classroom learning and help children grow into confident, curious learners. They also nurture a lasting sense of creativity that children can carry into everyday life and future goals.

What Are the Social Benefits of Group Activities?

Children thrive in community, and group activities help them strengthen communication and collaboration skills. In our programs, team games and shared projects give kids opportunities to practice empathy, patience, and leadership. They learn to share, take turns, and solve problems in a setting that emphasizes cooperation and mutual respect.

Key social benefits include:

  • Developing conflict resolution and active listening
  • Building friendships across age groups
  • Strengthening emotional intelligence
  • Increasing self-confidence through group success

These benefits extend far beyond our doors, positively influencing classroom performance and home behavior. As children become more socially aware, they also gain a stronger sense of belonging and self-worth.
