At Westhaven Elmhurst Community Recreation Association, we know that the wide range of workshops we offer provide a multitude of benefits for the children and parents who participate in our programs in N.D.G. Our association is all about creating a more caring local community for young and old through the use of leisure, sport and education. Our workshops embody this sense of community spirit and are tied very closely to a sense of social inclusion that is central to everything we do.
Our workshops are designed to be as beneficial as possible for our community participants, and what we offer is definitely shaped by the needs and wants of local people who interact with the Westhaven Elmhurst Community Recreation Association regularly. In recent times, this has seen us work on the Boite-A-Lunch project about healthy eating as well as an environmental fair focusing on ways in which local communal gardens can be used to grow food and create a more sustainable urban environment here in N.D.G.
The Power of the Lunch Box
Provided by the Depot Alimentaire N.D.G., the Boite-A-Lunch or Lunch Box Workshop is an educational project that we at Westhaven Elmhurst Community Recreation Association facilitated about the importance of healthy eating especially among younger people.
The educational workshops that were attended by primary and secondary school children as well as families in the neighborhood who wanted to get a better understanding of the benefits of healthy eating and food security, proved very beneficial. The workshop gave parents and kids a number of simple and easy to make lunch ideas while also explaining why healthy eating is so important for growing adolescents.
The workshop also focused on tying the nutrition value of certain meals with the cultural trends attached to different types of meals. This gave our younger participants a greater value of where food comes from and what it means in different parts of the world. As well as that, it helped enhance self-esteem and reinforce a sense of belonging among our participants.
An Environmental Fair to Remember
In 2016, Westhaven Elmhurst Community Recreation Association hosted its first environmental fair and it is safe to say that it was a resounding success. The main point of this fair was to show how urban agriculture could be simplified and adopted by families of all shapes and sizes.
Working closely with the City Farm School, issues as wide ranging as beekeeping, soap-making and micro-sprouts were discussed. Given the enthusiasm for these projects, it is to be expected that a number of similar fairs like this will be undertaken in the coming year.
