Ask About Our Activities for Over 50s

Why Does Lifelong Learning Still Matter After 50?

Learning has no expiration date. For many adults over 50, educational and social programs provide a wonderful way to stay curious, keep the mind active, meet new people, and enjoy a stronger sense of routine and community.

These activities help build confidence, foster connections, and make everyday tasks feel a bit easier, especially as technology and communication tools continue to evolve. They also promote healthy aging by offering more opportunities for social interaction, learning, and digital inclusion in daily life.

What Are the Benefits of Educational and Social Activities for Over 50s?

Educational and social activities do more than just entertain. They help participants stay mentally active, build social connections, and become more at ease with modern technology and routines. Community programs for those over 50 support learning computer skills, financial literacy, fraud prevention, and intergenerational involvement, showing how important these opportunities are.

Some of the most valued benefits include:

  • Building digital literacy for emails, video calls, online services, and everyday computer use
  • Supporting social wellness through regular conversation, shared hobbies, and group participation
  • Encouraging brain health with problem-solving activities, such as chess, Scrabble, and other strategy games
  • Creating routine and purpose during retirement or semi-retirement
  • Making community connection easier for people who want to stay active and involved

These benefits often work together. A computer class can help someone feel more confident online, better understand common risks, and stay engaged in a supportive classroom setting with others of a similar age.

How Can Trying a New Activity Build Confidence?

Trying something new can help adults over 50 feel more confident and open to new experiences. In a welcoming community setting, joining a class or group activity can feel much less intimidating and give participants a chance to learn at their own pace.

Along the way, they may discover new interests, feel more comfortable meeting others, and enjoy a growing sense of progress and accomplishment. Even small steps can make a meaningful difference and encourage people to keep exploring new opportunities.

Computer Class for the Over 50s

Nowadays, being able to use a computer properly is becoming a more and more important skill to have. The simple fact of the matter is that whether you are 50 or 15, you need to be able to navigate a computer comfortably. So, whether you wish to book a trip online or simply want to send an email with photos attached to your son or daughter living abroad, you need to know what you’re doing.

At Westhaven Elmhurst Community Recreation Association, our senior computer class provides those over 50 with a tailored course that is designed to improve their computer skills and develop a real appetite for browsing the internet. As part of this program, you will find our basic procedures like understanding how to send emails, attach photos, create excel files and improve your Microsoft Word knowledge in no time at all.

Participants are free to bring their own laptop or use ours—the choice is theirs.

How Can Digital Skills Help You Stay Safe Online?

Digital skills are about more than learning how to use a computer. They help adults over 50 feel more confident, independent, and safe when handling everyday online tasks. From recognizing scams and protecting personal information to creating strong passwords and avoiding suspicious messages, these skills can make technology feel much less overwhelming.

How Can Community Activities Help Older Adults Feel More Connected?

Community activities can help adults over 50 feel less isolated and more involved in daily life. Having a welcoming place to go each week creates opportunities for conversation, shared experiences, and a stronger sense of belonging. It can also make socializing feel easier and more natural, especially during major life changes like retirement.

These activities can help by:

  • Creating regular opportunities to meet and talk with others
  • Building a sense of routine and belonging
  • Making social interaction feel more comfortable
  • Encouraging friendships through shared interests

Even simple moments, like chatting before a class or laughing during a game, can help people feel more connected to their community.

Board Games for the Soul

Despite the wave of increased technological advancement recently, it is important to remember how important traditional board games are for interaction and engagement.

At Westhaven Elmhurst Community Recreation Association, our board games club is a great opportunity for both young and old in the area to come together, share experiences and get to know each other in a friendly and amicable environment.

We love to see people of all ages coming together and delving deep into a game of chess or scrabble. Our goal is to create a friendly environment that fosters this sense of togetherness, and we like to think that we have achieved that in our N.D.G. centre.
