Who Leads the Workshops?
Our facilitators are a blend of trained staff, experienced volunteers, and passionate community members who want to share their knowledge. Many of them live in the neighbourhood themselves and understand the unique needs and goals of the people they’re helping.
Each workshop leader brings their own background and teaching style, but all share the same core goal: creating an inclusive, respectful space for learning and connection. We also work closely with local organizations and professionals to ensure content is accurate, current, and aligned with community interests.
What Kinds of Skills Do Participants Gain?
We’ve seen firsthand how our workshops build confidence and competence in a range of life skills. Participants leave our sessions with practical knowledge and a renewed sense of empowerment.
Some common skills developed include:
By tailoring each workshop to the needs of the N.D.G. community, we ensure that every topic is both relevant and engaging, and promotes lifelong learning.
How Do Workshops Promote Lifelong Learning?
Workshops at Westhaven Elmhurst Community Recreation Association may seem like short-term enrichment on the surface, but they’re more than that. They’re stepping stones for lifelong learning. By focusing on practical skills, creativity, and social connection, each session encourages curiosity and growth at any age. Whether participants are trying a new hobby or brushing up on a forgotten skill, these workshops offer accessible and rewarding learning opportunities that fit into everyday life. They give people the tools to stay active, engaged, and mentally stimulated well into adulthood.
For youth, these experiences lay a foundation for personal development and academic success. For adults and seniors, they offer purpose, social connection, and the chance to pursue passions in a supportive environment.
How Are the Workshops Structured?
Most workshops follow a hands-on, interactive format. Rather than just sitting and listening, participants are encouraged to ask questions, try new things, and collaborate with others. Sessions typically include a short introduction, a live demonstration or activity, and time for discussion or reflection.
We aim to keep group sizes small to encourage personal attention and peer support. Whether it's a single session or part of a multi-week series, our workshops are designed to be flexible and responsive, shaped by the people in the room and the feedback they provide.
Why Do These Workshops Matter for N.D.G.?
In a diverse and dynamic area like N.D.G., access to free or low-cost workshops can make a real difference. They fill in gaps, spark connections, and strengthen the social fabric of our neighbourhood. For newcomers, workshops are often a first step toward building local friendships and learning how to navigate life in a new city. For longtime residents, they provide a reliable way to stay involved and give back.
More than just learning sessions, these workshops foster belonging. They’re places where people of all ages, cultures, and backgrounds can gather, share, and grow together.
The Power of the Lunch Box
Provided by the Depot Alimentaire N.D.G., the Boite-A-Lunch or Lunch Box Workshop is an educational project that we at Westhaven Elmhurst Community Recreation Association facilitated about the importance of healthy eating especially among younger people.
The educational workshops that were attended by primary and secondary school children as well as families in the neighborhood who wanted to get a better understanding of the benefits of healthy eating and food security, proved very beneficial. The workshop gave parents and kids a number of simple and easy to make lunch ideas while also explaining why healthy eating is so important for growing adolescents.
The workshop also focused on tying the nutrition value of certain meals with the cultural trends attached to different types of meals. This gave our younger participants a greater value of where food comes from and what it means in different parts of the world. As well as that, it helped enhance self-esteem and reinforce a sense of belonging among our participants.
An Environmental Fair to Remember
In 2016, Westhaven Elmhurst Community Recreation Association hosted its first environmental fair and it is safe to say that it was a resounding success. The main point of this fair was to show how urban agriculture could be simplified and adopted by families of all shapes and sizes.
Working closely with the City Farm School, issues as wide ranging as beekeeping, soap-making and micro-sprouts were discussed. Given the enthusiasm for these projects, it is to be expected that a number of similar fairs like this will be undertaken in the coming year.
